The Lowcountry –
The Lowcountry is an area along South Carolina’s coast. It includes one of my favorite vacation spots – Hilton Head Island.
Hilton Head Island (I’ll abbreviate to HHI) has some of the best beaches on the Atlantic coast.

Hilton Head Island
The island is also known for it’s golfing, tennis, fishing, shopping, boating, horseback riding and some of the best food in the Southeast. It is also host to the PGA Heritage of Golf event.
HHI has a unique culture built on a rich history of Southern, Native American, European, Caribbean, and African roots.
The island is only 12 miles long and 4 miles wide, HHI is a great relaxing location. The weather is nice in the summer and mild in the winter, so year-round the outside is calling. Bicycles are a major form of transportation on the island. There are over 60 miles of bicycle trails on the island! You will see people of all ages cycling around the island and there are many places to rent bicycles.
HHI is not just a great beach location, there are a lot of cultural sites and a vibrant nightlife. It’s has something for everyone!
The first time we visited Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, it was also my first visit to HHI. One of the first things I noticed was the lack of billboards. There are also no neon signs. Everything on the island is built to be in harmony with nature. If someone asks you if you have seen Wal-Mart on HHI, you can say you saw the sign 🙂 The building is not visible from the main road. Even the parking lot has a lot of trees.

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort
We are Disney Vacation Club members and Disney Hilton Head Island is one of my favorite resorts. We have spent many weekends and weeks there.
Several years, we had family Christmas vacation there. It is so much fun because resort visitors decorate their porches and doors. Many like us even have a (small) Christmas tree. On Christmas Eve, Santa visits in the lodge den. We had our picture made with Santa and the grandkids gave him last minute requests. On Christmas Day, the cast members go door to door with Disney presents matching what the kids wanted! Really a cool touch!
Like other vacation club resorts, Disney Hilton Head Island Resort has many types of accommodations; Studio rooms with a kitchenette, One and Two Bedroom suites with a living room and full size, fully equipped kitchen. We usually eat at a restaurant for one meal each day and cook the other meals. There are several grocery stores, Wal-Mart, and Sam’s close to the resort so it is easy to stock the kitchen.
The resort is tucked away among live oak trees covered with Spanish moss. (I love the look of Spanish moss and just recently learned it is an air plant). It’s easy to find peace at the resort, although it is just a short walk to dining and shopping at Shelter Cove Marina.
The resort is fashioned after a 1940’s hunting and fishing lodge. In Disney-style, all the furnishing and decor fit the lodge theme.
Disney Hilton Head Resort offers many amenities and recreational activities. Along with everything at the lodge resort, Disney Hilton Head has a private beach just a short drive/bike away. There is a shuttle bus that can also be used to go between the lodge and the beach.
Disney Hilton Head Beach and Clubhouse
At the beach house, there is a heated pool, quick-serve dining, and a clubhouse. Inside the clubhouse, there are games, TV’s, a fireplace and lots of comfy furniture. Take a break from the beach and spend some socializing time in the clubhouse.
Back At The Resort
Back at the resort, you will find another heated pool with a water tower waterside. During the day, the cast members play music and pool games. The waterside drops in the Big Dipper pool. The younger guests can play in the Little Dipper pool. Adults will like the whirlpool spa.
There are organized activities for the whole family including many different crafts, bingo, fishing, games and water sports.
Hammocks are around the property to relax in. There are also shuffleboard courts, cornhole games, ping pong tables, foosball, a Mickey putting green, horseshoes, a playground grills and tables for some outdoor cooking, games and pool table in the den and cookies and drinks every afternoon in the main building foyer! Really something for everyone.
At night you can sit around the campfire with other guests and cast members and participate in funny stories and songs and of course s’mores!
The Accommodations
Disney is known for quality and customer service. The accommodations are large and very nice.
This is the foyer. A washer and dryer are across from the coat rack. Notice the fishing equipment above the rack.
We use the hangers for stocking at Christmas.
Kitchen
The kitchen is also large and has everything you will need: a full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, place settings and utensils for 8, serving bowls, a toaster, coffee pot, pots and pans, and a blender. I probably forgot something, but Disney didn’t!
I have prepared Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners there with all the trimmings.
Living Room
An open living room has a large TV and DVD player. The gift shop has movies to loan. The one bedroom unit like I am showing will sleep 5. The couch makes a double bed and the large chair makes a twin bed.

Notice the fishing and hunting theme. Disney is very good at making it feel like you are actually in an old-time lodge.
Bedroom and Bath
Disney resort one bedroom units have a king size bed and attached bath. Furnishings include a flat-screen TV, bedside tables, lamps, a dresser, and a relaxing chair. Like the rest of the rooms, it is decorated in beach and fishing lodge style. There is a door from the bedroom and a door from the living room that goes out to a porch with rocking chairs and a table with chairs. The bath is separated into 2 rooms. One with a jetted tub and double sink. The toilet, shower and another sink are in a separate room. That toilet room is also shared with everyone in the suite. There is a door into the toilet room from the foyer.
The resort has a gift shop called Broad Creek Mercantile where you can also get some basic groceries and sundries. Near the gift shop, there is a workout room and community center. The community center is where a lot of the organized activities take place. There is a walk up quick food store called Tide Me Over. The menu includes breakfast and lunch with Carolina cooking, fruit smoothies, sandwiches, and salads and much more.
Other Resort Amenities
Notice in the picture below that the base of the chairs at the bar are Mickey heads 🙂
There is also a mascot of the resort. She is named “Shadow” and is a real live Golden Retriever!
Although Disney’s Hilton Head Resort is a Disney Vacation Club resort, it is open to the public to stay. Believe me, even if you are not DVC members, you will be so glad you visited!
