I have a Silhouette Cameo cutting machine and love it! Several friends have a Cricut and love it as much as I do my Cameo. Pinterest is my go-to resource when I don’t know how to do something.

I saved many pins to my Silhouette Cameo board and decided to write a post about my favorite ones. Each image will link back to the original post.

Layering vinyl is very difficult for me.  I have to admit that I am intimidated by layering. This article does a very good job explaining that using a registration mark is a way to line up things.

Silhouette Cameo Tips Silhouette Weld

There are several built-in Silhouette functions that are very handy but I always forget how to do them. Welding is when you take two or more overlapping design elements and weld or join them together. This will allow you to have your design cut as one big word instead of individual letters. This also works for numbers and shapes. This tutorial is a great reference for using weld.

Silhouette Cameo Tips Compound path

A compound path is similar to grouping but with a compound path the inner lines are embedded into the design allowing a design to be filled with color properly. This is especially useful when doing a print and cut project. According to the Silhouette Cameo manual, a compound path is “Compound paths are a collection of two or more line sets where inner lines are embedded into the image. A compound path may appear the same as a grouped set of lines, but is quite different in the way it will react to being filled with color, for example.”

Don’t confuse grouping and compound path. Grouping is simply moving layered pieces together so they stay in the same relative spot while forming a compound path is literally joining the shapes together to form one new shape.

Weeding is sometimes very tedious work. You need all the help you can get! This is one of the best tips I found and it is so easy! Silhouette Cameo Tips Silhouette tools

Most crafting projects need some kind of tool and the Silhouette (or Cricut) is no different. The hook, scraper, spatula, pick-me-up tool, roll feeder, and pen holder are all detailed in this tutorial.

You can purchase the tools separately or some machines come with a set of tools.

Silhouette Cameo Clean cuts

Sometimes when cutting on cardstock you can get torn or ripped places, especially with a corner. This can be really frustrating causing you to totally waste supplies and your patience 🙂  Silhouette studio to the rescue! There is a function called Line Segment Overcut that will give you clean corners. Use this tutorial to learn how to use this function and avoid bad cuts.

Silhouette Cameo PicScan

Several years ago Silhouette introduced the PixScan ability. With a special mat, you place whatever design you want to cut on the mat, take a picture, then load the picture into your machine. It is similar to print and cut, but you use something you didn’t print. I am making this sound confusing – sorry – check this easy to understand tutorial.
