Some Disney Magic On Disney Cruise Line Ships
Disney Cruise Door Magnets
Are you going on a Disney Cruise Line cruise? The first time we cruised Disney, I noticed that people decorated their cabin doors. I felt a little left out 🙂
Turns out, the cabin doors (except Concierge-level on the Dream and Fantasy) are magnetic. Over the years, the number of people decorating their doors has grown to where more doors are decorated than are not!

For many cruises now, I have created personalized Mickey head magnets for our door. I also created other magnets and dry erase boards.
Note that Disney will not allow any tape or adhesive stickers or door hangers. You have to use magnets. The inside of the cabins is also magnetic so you can use magnets to hold papers and notes.

Create Your Magnet In Word
To create your Disney cruise magnet, first, select an image you want inside the Mickey outline. Be careful not to violate any copyrights. Save the image on your computer and remember where you saved it.
Click the Mickey outline below and right-click to save to your computer in the png format it is in.
Open Word to a new document. Click the Insert tab. Click Pictures and locate your character image and select it. You now have a Word document with your image in it.
Expand the image to the size you want to use.
Right-click on the image and select Wrap Text and Behind Text. Save the document.
Open the Insert tab again and click Pictures. Browse to the location where you saved the Mickey head outline and select it. Save the document.
Right-click the Mickey head outline and select Wrap Text and select In Front Of Text.
Resize either or both pictures until you have the Mickey head as you want it. Save the document. I also lowered the Word document zoom so I could see it all on one page.
If you want text on your magnet, click Insert Text Box. I picked Simple Text Box.
Move the text box to the area where you want text. Enter your text. Save the document.
Select the text box and the Format tab. Select Shape Fill and select No Fill. Save the document.
Select the text and change it to the color you want. Save the document.
Tilt the text box if you want to.
Save the document. You now have a ready to print the document.
Take note that I suggest saving your document a lot. This comes from experience 🙂
Print the document you created. I use card stock because it is heavier. It just makes the magnet a little more stable but regular paper will also work.
Laminate and Cut Your Printed Mickey Head
Use a personal laminating machine or go to an office supply and have the magnet document laminated.
I personally have this Scotch Thermal Laminating machine.
The machine comes with 20 letter-size sheets, or you can buy a pack. The machine is affordable and you would be surprised how many things need laminating 🙂
After laminating, carefully cut around the Mickey head outline, leaving a little laminating edge.
I usually run the magnet through the laminating machine one more time after cutting to be sure the edges are sealed. I just find this easier – but you can cut the design paper first, laminate and then cut again.
Your door magnet is almost ready!
The Last Preparation Step
The last thing you need to do is attach magnets. I usually get ones like these strong magnets, or you can use adhesive magnetic strips. The magnet choice is yours, but I will tell you that I see ones on doors that slide down the door from opening and closing, so stronger magnet the better 🙂
You are now ready to start your door display!

How fun! Going on a Disney Cruise is on my bucket list for sure. I love the idea that people decorate their doors!

Disney cruises are our favorite vacations! With or without kids / grandkids 🙂
This is really cute…also a great idea for the home, too. My mom has a door that is magnetic and something like this would make a great gift.
Thank you! The one in the post is actually a gift for a friend 🙂
These are really cute!
Thank you!
We are going on a cruise with my niece. I have made designs and put in a word document. I am going to print on card stock then laminate. What do you recommend using for magnets and attaching to the cut outs/ designs ? Thank you for your time.
Betty Jean, Disney Cruise is so so much fun! And I’m glad you were able to make door decorations. I have used different types of magnets and they all seem to work pretty well. I have used the kind that come in a roll and you cut them. It just seems that you have to use more of them than you might want to. Then I’ve also bought small round more heavy duty magnets and they work great, usually only need one per decoration. I would love to see what you have created 🙂
How big did you make the magnet for around the door porthole. I can’t find a size for that anywhere?
Thanks!!
Shelley, I will have to do some checking and will get back to you. 🙂
Shelley,
Thank you for reading my post! The room number porthole is approx 7.5 inches in diameter. Just be sure your design has at least that opening. I would love to see what you make!
Thank you for the instructions! I’m struggling to save the template as a .png file…it’s only giving me an option to save as a WEBP file, which I’m unfamiliar with and my computer can’t open in Word. Any advice?
Katie,
Thank you for contacting me! Sorry I am a little late replying. I am not sure why it wants to save as a WEBP file – does the same when I try to download it.
Try this link Mickey Head. If you still cannot get it, send me your email address and I will send as an attachment.
Janet
Katie,
I also have used https://convertio.co/webp-png/ (a free web app) for file conversions. It works great!
I came across your info through a youtube video I watched that used your design. After following your instructions I created 11 of them for our upcoming family cruise. I LOVE THEM!!!! I saved so much money doing them myself. I can’t thank you enough. I wish I knew how to upload the pictures so I can share them with you.
Belle,
You made my day!!
So someone used my idea and created a youtube video? I am much more comfortable writing than being on camera, so good for them!
I would love to see your creations. If you could take a picture and send it in an email to janet@janetbpearson.com that would be great!
It is great that you saved money making them – that’s my way to go 🙂
When is your cruise? We are going on the Wish at the end of this month.
Thank you for your kind comments!
Janet
Hello,
I have tried to insert a picture in the Mickey head. I have done a bit in Word and am a bit familiar with it. The Mickey head is opaque and I can’t choose to have no colour inside. Then the picture I want to insert is covered. I have saved as a png, so I don’t think that is the issue. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance
Joanne
Joanne,
I am not sure what is happening. Would you send me the picture you are using and let me see if I can get it to work? You can send it to janet@janetbpearson.om.
Thanks,
Janet
Thanks so much for the tutorial! I’m so happy with how our magnets turned out and can’t wait for our cruise!!!
Shannon,
My pleasure! I am so glad it was helpful and I know you will love your cruise!
